What are you doing this summer?
We're driving to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. From Bodiam, England. Approximately a third of the globe.
Two people. 10,000 miles. 16 countries. Three deserts. Five mountain ranges.
1.1-liter engine in the car. One hell of an adventure.

Wait. What are you doing?
We are participating in the 2013 Mongol Rally, a rally driving adventure from London to Ulaanbaatar.
This is not a rally in the conventional sense. There is a starting line in England and there is a finish line in Ulaanbaatar, but there is little else. There are no support vehicles. There is no guide. There isn't even a route. It is each rallier's job to find a path across Eurasia on their own. And it's certainly not a race; if you get to Ulaanbaatar first, it just means you didn't have enough fun along the way.
Believe it or not, we're not the only ones that think this is a good idea. The Mongol Rally has been run by the Adventurists for ten years, and we're going to join in on this tenth running of the rally. In 2012, 879 people participated in the Rally in 297 teams. We won't be alone in 2013!
According to the Adventurists, traveling is for sissies. This is a way to see a large part of the world that would be easily missed by booking package tours and staying with the crowds.

But why are you doing that?
In addition to being an amazing adventure, the Mongol Rally is for a good cause. The entry fee paid to the Adventurists goes to Cool Earth, an Adventurist-sponsored Amazon rainforest protection organization. All the additional money we raise will go to the Lotus Children's Centre in Ulaanbaatar. Lotus works with vulnerable children in Ulaanbaatar to provide basic human needs, such as food, shelter, and education. We can't imagine a reason why you wouldn't want to support an organization like that!
Well, at least you're going to be dressed in normal clothes, right?
Of course not! We'll be dressed like pirates!
